I LOVE the Doc Ford novels
I LOVE the Doc Ford novels. I tried hard to give Randy a pass on this book and character, but I just can't. I found this book to be just horrid. I'm convinced that Randy didn't even write it. The style is poor, the characters are totally unrealistic and full of contradictions. The story lurched around with not much drama developed at all. The dialogue is childish with so many contradictions it was distracting. I didn't really care what happened in the end.Hannah is supposed to be a very smart and capable woman, but appeared largely helpless most times. She is ignorant of how internet searches work. She studied physiology and chemistry and yet had no idea about the function of the frontal lobe or what Benzedrine is. She did not know that cell phones capture phone numbers. On page 199, you find "The po-lice" Mica said, making it a two-syllable word". It IS a two syllable word! She even had to look up the word "negotiator" in the dictionary (and explains it incorrectly). Please Randy, stick to Doc Ford and give us more of those novels and shelve helpless Hannah.

Poorly Written, Poorly Drawn Characters
This is the last Hannah Smith book I will read. When she was introduced in "Captiva", I was interested in her continuing adventures. Sad to say, I am no longer. She is supposedly a tall, strong woman, but her thought process and actions draw a picture of a short, woman afraid of being wrong and totally incapable of grasping the obvious. The introduction of Bertie ("Birdy" as the moronic Smith calls her) is about the only saving grace of this book. The 'bad' people are somewhat derivative and formulaic, and inexplicably inept. I have noticed a drop-off in the Adventures of Doc Ford and Tomlinson in recent books--they are not as riveting as they had been--and if Hannah Smith was meant to save the franchise, well, this is not the way to do it. In the title of the book, one wonders if the 'deceived' is actually the one who shelled out good money for this non-adventure.

LOVE this series!!!
Sitting in an outdoor lobby space of a hotel in Bonita Springs,FL when a passing staff member stopped and smiled and said, “Reading a local author, huh?😉” ... kind of surprised me that he would know, but made me smile. Absolutely LOVE this series, but I love almost all of the Randy Wayne White novels.

It was OK in that it didn't require a great deal of concentration
It was OK in that it didn't require a great deal of concentration, as is the case with all the books in this series. I've read all the Doc Ford novels and find them much more engaging.. Can't shake the feeling that an uncredited co-writer might be involved in the Hannah Smith series. I prefer the this series on CD in the car because they are pretty uncomplicated.

A very good read!
I discovered this author by accident. Got the first Hannah Smith book from the free book shelf at the doctors office. Liked it so much purchased this one. Both books good, solid characters. Looking forward to reading next in the series.

Somewhat disappointed in this effort
I keep hoping that Hannah Smith will develop as a captivating character in a Randy Wayne White's novels. That has not happened for me yet. This book just was a struggle to get through as it just could not keep my interest. I am a great fan of a Randy Wayne White and this did not dampen my appetite goes his next book with Hannah as leading character. In my view this was not one of his better efforts.

Four Stars
Another excellent book from Randy White

Randy doesn't get it....DOC FORD you dummy
Mr. White has fallen into the well of extra characters. He follows John Locke into the mistaken belief that side characters are why we like the Doc Ford or Donavan Creed mysteries. The extras are to be killed off, sexed off and perhaps forgotten. Damn it Randy, write for your audience or don't write at all.

Come back Doc, ditch this poor shadow of your former self
author should have stayed with his main character.,Hannah smith is unconvincing and "WOMENS WEEKLY" standard. Go back to the Doc' and entertain us!. BillBrown

Toller Krimi-Autor, sehr spannend, gepaart mit super Eindrücken über die Natur Floridas
Toller Autor, sehr spannende Krimis. Er schreibt über das Leben auf Floridas Inseln, mit tollen Natur-Beschreibungen und sehr spannenden Plots. Die Bücher sind Teil einer Serie, wobei die Inhalte nur locker aufeinander aufbauen. Man kann also jederzeit einsteigen.

3rd Hannah Smith and I am still waiting for a new Doc Ford
Well, I am a big Doc Ford fan and was hoping to find a substitute with the new femal hero of the Hannah Smith series. I now have read all three books but still do not get warm with the character. Even creating a woman fishing guide, I think the feminility is overdone and does not result in a believable person. Therefore, still waiting for a new Doc Ford (even if he sometimes makes short apearances in the Hannah Smith series). I also think that the lot of information about nature, old Florida and environmental problems contained in the Doc Ford series is somehow missing here.
