Wonderful book. I am happy I gave it a second chance.
I must admit, I hated this book when I had to read it in college. However, over the summer my 14-year-old niece decided to read it as part of a her summer reading project so I decided to order this book and read it along with her. I guess I am one of those people who needed a decade or two of life to really appreciate the themes and ideas explored in this book as my stance has changed - I really enjoy this book and am glad I gave it another chance. My niece really enjoys it too save for one issue: many of the books she now has to read at school she views as "long winded garbage," perhaps Fitzgerald has set the bar too high for some modern-day writers. All in all, if you are looking for a relatively quick read that is drenched in meaning, or a relatively quick read about a romance gone awry, then this book is for you. Though you might want to keep a link to Cliffsnotes available if you want to explore every last drip of meaning from this book.

A tragic story and a timeless classic
I loved this book and read it in one go. It is amazingly written and so wonderfully narrated you can't help getting drawn into the drama enfolding within the book. Its only when you read the book that you realize why the book is fascinating and a favourite of many people.

tragico e bello

Und dann Sätze wie dieser: “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orcastic future that year by year recedes before us.“ ...

The Jazz Age Novel
The Great Gatsby tells the story of Jay Gatz (Gatsby) who falls in love with Daisy before going off to war. During this time, Daisy marries Tom Buchanan, who is a very wealthy man. When Gatsby returns he makes his own wealth, buys a grand house just across the bay from where Daisy and Tom live and throws huge, extravagant parties in the hope that Daisy will one day turn up and they can once again be reunited. It is a romantic tale and one that the reader, right from the start, knows will fail. But Gatsby is a true romantic and nothing will stop him trying, as he tries to repeat the past against all odds.It is a story that is beautifully written. It has lots of quotable and memorable lines in it and it touches on so many aspects of life in general and the1920s Jazz Age in particular. Indeed, Fitzgerald seems to have captured the age remarkably well, considering he was such a young man―in his twenties―when he wrote the book.I have now read the book on more than one occasion and each time I find something new in it. I also have my favourite chapter (ch. 7), though others have told me that they prefer the descriptions of the the parties in the early chapters in the book. If there is one fault with the novel it is that it is rather short and I think that an extra hundred or so pages could have been given to exploring the characters in a little more depth. But this is a minor quibble for what is a very good book.I hope you find my review helpful.

Gatsby still a classy read
I read the Great Gatsby as my son had been assigned to read it as part of his grade 12 ciricuulum. I had always meant to read it but kept putting it off. I'm so glad I took the time to read this gem of a book. The characters are so well written, and you get to know them so well in a short space of time. The writing, narrative style, gives a very personal feel to the book, almost like you are invited into the story. It's a must read.
