After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers. From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End", MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at times, the resemblance is alarming, but MOVEMENT is the sound of Sumner finding his voice. The spacey synth-pop of "The Him" foreshadows the sound New Order was to slowly develop, as Sumner became more comfortable with the upper reaches of his vocal range. Dynamic play abounds--the existentialist drone of "Truth" gives way to a crushing, chaotic guitar wail, while the intense, revealingly named "Doubts Even Here" slowly erupts beneath a disturbing double-vocal, stressing the burgeoning diversity of this legendary band in the making.

how did i miss this?
I missed this when it came out in 1981. I was a huge Joy division fan but never really got New Order at the time .Anyway, I recently saw Peter Hook and the Light live and it was awesome, the Joy Division set really brought the memories back, and the New Order stuff was amazing too. They played a track off this album that I didn't know but I thought sounded great {truth} so I decided to buy it hoping for more of the same. I wasn't disappointed, this album is so Joy Division. Peter Hooks heavy duty bass lines, steven morris lacerating drumming and Bernard Sumners taut guitar figures inhabite the album. The vocals aren't that clear but they sound ominous and right. The percussion especially is among the best ive heard on an album. Standout tracks for me Senses, Chosen time and especially I C B. i would throughly recomend this to any Joy division fans

Essential for serious New Order fans
Lovely packaging. Great quality live footage and audio - much better than I was expecting. The Extras cd is also fantastic - the demos sound to my ears far better than the final LP versions. I also saved £20 by pre-ordering it on Christmas Day - cheers Amazon! The only gripe I have is that it's a little greedy of the band to expect fans to fork out for the 12" singles separately - for over £100 I think these should have been included in the package. You only get an LP, 2 cds and a dvd, for that price? Bad form, boys. Luckily the high quality of the audio and footage eases the pain.

Expensive but worth it!
Yes it is a bit pricey but as soon as I received I understood why. It’s heftier than I was expecting, the vinyl of Movement is presented well and sounds great. The hardback book is really nice indeed. The extras cd is fascinating, Hooky and Steve trying out vocals and generally finding their feet. Finally the DVD is the item I was looking forward to the most and it’s very interesting indeed, shows the three piece band playing Hurrah’s in 1980, not really ready for playing live yet but the basic template is there. So if you’re a NO fan you need to own this. I just can’t wait for the PCL box.

Could have been better
The dvd on this is the most interesting part of the set. The transition was quick from the uncertainty of the Hurrah's performance to the more settled Peppermint Lounge show. The out takes are also interesting. For me, it's more about what's missing. Whilst duplication of the second disc of the deluxe edition would may seem superfluous, those tracks should be there. The version of In a lonely place on the 2nd Ceremony disc is still not on CD. It needs to be on a digital format. A live CD wouldn't have gone amiss either. With the cost, I would have expected a little more. The book is lovely. And finally I have the 180g vinyl after many attempts.

Excellent collection of first album era recordings
Beautiful collection. This album gets a bad rep but I always found it very interesting and rate it higher than some of their later efforts. They were finding their feet at this stage and experimenting with new sounds and production methods. This collection brings together almost everything you could want from this period including the Western Works Demo Sessions and a collaboration with Cabaret Voltaire (who owned Western Works). The track itself is certainly more CV than NO.For a fan or a completist this is an essential purchase.

For a real fan...
For all the annoying New Order reisues (many poor quality) that I have given up buying this is the business. Beautifully packaged, great selection and variety of contents, albumn, DVD, CDs and hard back booklet it very much an definitive package of the album Movement. Only gripe is could have in included the 12"singles from this period but I suppose the next reissue of Movement will include those.

AWESOME order
Sod what sweaty fans may say over this album. Its awesome....i loved it much more then i expected.I could go on about this being the "transition period" or write stuff you already know. You obviously have a sense of taste otherwise you'd be looking up the neanderthal knuckle scraping Beady Eye.Moody,dissonant,glacial,unfriendly,surly....you can see why i don't review for a living. But what i do love is music thats good, music that matters, music that can't just be genetically modified and stamped.Plus i can listen to the production of Martin THE GOD Hannett all day long.Movement is a great album and the price is a snip.Place that order.

Just wow!
I have purchased all of these limited edition new order re-issues. I think they’re great. However, it is important to know that I am a complete fanatic and have collected multiple items from their catalog. I have CDs, vinyl, memorabilia, etc. I think these Expanded editions are wonderful for big fans of the band and I am very happy and grateful that they took the time to put together these products. If you just want to listen to the music, just stream it, however, if you are like me and enjoy collecting , various cool and unique issues from your favorite artist, I think all of these releases are excellent. Happy listening.

Another boxset for my husband to treasure. Has a collection of unopened boxsets by his beloved New Order. And other favourite bands. Looks very good quality.
